New speaker system brings music to downtown streets

Arts & Culture News Public Works Streets June 15, 2020

Partnership makes WYKY-FM the “Official Radio Station of Downtown Somerset”

Downtown Somerset residents and business owners were greeted with music June 11 as the City of Somerset turned on its new outdoor speakers.

Through a partnership with Somerset 106.1 WYKY-FM, speakers installed on light poles along East Mount Vernon Street and around Fountain Square will play the Forcht Broadcasting station live between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The partnership makes Somerset 106.1 the “Official Radio Station of Downtown Somerset.”

“Making downtown a vibrant place to live, work and play is an important part of our work to light up Somerset,” Somerset Mayor Alan Keck said. “We hope residents, business owners and visitors downtown enjoy hearing local radio as they walk along East Mount Vernon and the square and that they find our downtown warm and inviting.”

Forcht Broadcasting is a community-focused, small market radio group based in Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois. Its Somerset station features local programming that will provide helpful information to visitors downtown, Keck said.

“We so greatly appreciate community partners like Somerset 106 who want to help us inform and welcome residents and visitors,” Keck said.

Forcht Broadcasting Senior Vice President Amy Stroud and Somerset 106.1 FM General Manager Kevin Wilson said they are appreciative of the opportunity to be a part of the growth and excitement happening downtown.

“Somerset 106 and Forcht Broadcasting are honored to be the official radio station of downtown Somerset,” Stroud and Wilson said. “We’re hometown radio, and Somerset’s our hometown. Somerset 106 hopes to provide our community with a great soundtrack to the downtown Somerset experience.”

The speaker system will also be available for emergency announcements and communication during downtown festivals and events.

As part of the project, the City of Somerset has enhanced its downtown Wi-Fi network, which provides free service to downtown visitors. A more robust network will be available to Lake Cumberland Farmers Market and festival vendors to make payment processing faster and more efficient.
