Workers’ compensation grant allows the city to have high participation at KLC’s Risk & Safety Conference

The City of Somerset has received a $3,000 Workers’ Compensation Safety Grant from the Kentucky League of Cities (KLC) Insurance program to support employee participation in the annual KLC Risk & Safety Conference.

The conference, hosted annually in March, brings together municipal leaders, safety professionals and frontline employees from across Kentucky for hands-on training focused on workplace safety, risk reduction and continuing education. Sessions cover topics ranging from OSHA updates and defensive driving to practical safety strategies for public works, utilities, parks, fleet operations and emergency services.

Somerset was also recognized during the conference as one of the cities with the highest employee attendance at this year’s event, with 18 participating.

“This recognition reflects the culture of safety we continue to build across every department in the City of Somerset,” Safety Director Marc Travis said. “We want our employees to have access to the best training and the latest safety practices available. Continuing education opportunities like the KLC Risk & Safety Conference help our team stay informed, prepared and committed to protecting both themselves and the public they serve.”

Several employees were recognized at the conference for their completion of continuing education hours. Travis and Crew Member Charles Combs earned silver certificates, while Technician Marcus Barber, Corrosion Tech Brent Creech, and Meter and Regulator Tech Lee Hall received bronze certificates.

Mayor Alan Keck said the city’s investment in employee safety is ultimately an investment in the community.

“Our employees work hard every day to provide essential services for Somerset, sometimes in less-than-desirable conditions,” Keck said. “These employees deserve every opportunity to learn how to keep themselves safe on the job so they can return home safely each day to their families. We are grateful to KLC Insurance for supporting that mission through this grant program and proud that Somerset was recognized for prioritizing safety training and professional development.”

The KLC Workers’ Compensation Safety Grant program supports member cities that demonstrate a commitment to proactive risk management and workplace safety initiatives. The grant reimburses eligible safety-related expenses, including conference participation and training opportunities. Learn more at klc.org.
